International Lifeguard Training Program at Takoma Aquatic Center
The International Lifeguard Training Program™ (ILTP®) is a comprehensive training program with an objective-driven and performance-based curriculum. It is designed to provide foundational aquatic safety concepts, techniques, best practices, and the latest standards utilized in modern aquatic facilities, located anywhere in the world. The integrated curriculum includes professionalism, proactive management of guests, incident prevention strategies, guest surveillance, water rescue techniques, standard first aid, healthcare provider CPR, emergency oxygen support, and automated external defibrillation.
Mandatory course prerequisites include: (100) yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke, 10lb. diving brick retrieval from maximum depth, and (1) minute tread without the use of hands.
Per ILTP guidelines, this certification is inclusive of the following training components:
1. Conscious, unconscious and suspected neck and back rescue skills for water depths not exceeding 16 feet
2. Healthcare Provider/ Professional Rescuer CPR
3. Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
4. Oxygen Administration
5. Standard First Aid
6. 80% or better on the written exam (50 multiple choice questions)
7. Demonstrated skill competency as described in the ILTP textbook
Schedule:
Thursday and Friday 5pm-9pm
Saturday and Sunday 10am-6pm
All lifeguards employed at DPR must maintain a valid ILTP certification. Lifeguards are expected to maintain their skills at a “test-ready” level at all times and are subject to unannounced aquatic safety audits. Passing the ILTP course DOES NOT guarantee employment with DPR. This credential is non-transferable.
